Welcome to the traditional charm of the thoroughly modern Russell Cottages. Located in the Bay of Islands, Russell (Kororareke) was the first capital of New Zealand. Only 3 hours drive from Auckland, Russell has always been a focal point in the bay.
Originally an old whalers retreat and port, the village is steeped in history. From streets lined with quaint weather board cottages, the old iron clad general store, the historic Catholic mission and the favourite big game fishing ground of the famous American author, Zane Grey. Russell is part of living history, set against a background of the irradiant blue water of the bay.
Russell Cottages echo the charm and history that is, Russell. Adjacent to the historic school site, on Chapel Street in the heart of the village, the cottages are nestled in established trees, and beside a running brook Facilities .
Built from traditional timber weather board, the three and four bedroom dwellings have solid timber floors, raked timber ceilings and are fully appointed to a high standard.
Russell, formerly known as Kororareka, was the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand. It is situated in the Bay of Islands, in the far north of the North Island. As at the 2001 census it had a resident population of 804, now risen to around 1,100 though much of the accommodation in the area consists of holiday homes or is for tourist use.
When European and American ships began visiting New Zealand in the early 1800s the indigenous Maori quickly recognised there were great advantages in trading with these strangers, who they called tauiwi.
